6 more shot dead on Kashmir military line
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Srinagar, India, June 29, IRNA -- Indian army Tuesday claimed to have six armed foreign militants shot dead in an encounter on the dividing Line of Control (LOC) in Kupwara sector of Kashmir.
Giving details, Defence Spokesman Lt. Col. J.S. Brar said, "Six infiltrating terrorists were killed when army foiled an intrusion bid in north Kashmir on Monday night."
He said three soldiers also laid down their lives in the encounter, adding, "The operation against the intruders was still on."
Line of Control that divides Kashmir between India and Pakistan is manned by Indian military unlike the international borders where paramilitary Border Security Force (BSF) is deployed.
In Kashmir politicians of all hues including Chief Minister Omar Abdullah have recently cast doubts on the veracity of encounter claims by the Indian army.
The current mass upsurge in Kashmir was sparked off last month by the killing in one such 'fake' encounter of three youth from a north Kashmir village by the army personnel on the LOC.
Human rights groups accuse Indian forces of staging encounters for fetching rewards and promotions.
