US Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman arrives in Pakistan

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Islamabad, June 26, IRNA -- US Navy Adm. Mike Mullen, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, has arrived in Pakistan to meet with Pakistani leaders and US Embassy officials here, the US embassy said.

While in Pakistan, Adm. Mullen is scheduled to meet with Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari; Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, Chief of Army Staff; and Air Chief Marshal Rao Qamar Suleman, Chief of Air Staff, a statement from the US embassy said.

Meanwhile, US Air Force Gen. Norton Schwartz, US Air Force Chief of Staff, visited the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) Headquarters here Saturday and met with Air Chief Marshal Rao Qamar Suleman, Pakistan Air Force Chief of Air Staff, and other senior PAF officials, another US embassy statement said.

During his visit, the general placed a wreath on the PAF Martyrs’ Monument to honor the sacrifices made by Pakistan’s security forces and citizens in their fight against violent extremists, it said.

Sources said that Mike Mullen’s visit is aimed at taking into confidence the Pakistani political and military leadership about the sacking of top US commander in Afghanistan, General Stanley McChrystal.

McChrystal was sacked by President Obama for making derogatory remarks about President Barack Obama and his team in a magazine interview.

The US Admiral arrived in Islamabad after he traveled to Afghanistan to assure Afghan leaders that there will be no change in the US policy after the removal of General McChrystal.

US Vice President Joe Biden had called President Asif Zardari and Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani to take them into confidence about the change of command in Afghanistan.
