Strasburg's criticism of Russian legislation unbiased - official
16:51 24/06/2010 ST. PETERSBURG, June 24 (RIA Novosti) - Criticism of Russian legislation made by the European Court on Human Rights is unbiased, the Russian Justice Minister said on Thursday.
"The vast majority of decisions upheld by the European Court of Human Rights objectively establish problems with legislation and law enforcement. These are serious and long-term issues," Alexander Konovalov told a law conference in St. Petersburg.
He said the issue concerns complaints on illegally long pre-trial detention, poor conditions in penitentiary facilities and cases being delayed.
"From the 170,000 complaints [heard by the court] 35,000 are ours [Russia's]. And there is no reason to expect the flow to decrease," Konovalov said.
