Britain suffers fourth fatality in Afghanistan in four days
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
London, June 23, IRNA -- Four Royal Marines have been killed in Afghanistan in the past four days, bringing the total number of British deaths to 303 since the overthrow of the Taliban regime in 2001.
All four were killed in the Sangin district of Helmand province, where British troops have suffered almost a third of their fatalities.
The Ministry of Defence in London said Thursday that the latest victim was killed in a gun battle with insurgents, while conducting a security patrol to reassure locals.
Two marines also died on Tuesday and Wednesday as a result of small arms fire, while one was killed on Monday following an explosion.
British soldiers have suffered 58 fatalities so far this year compared with 32 killed in the first six months of 2009. This includes 14 who have lost their lives since the US took over control of some 8,000 UK troops in Helmand province at the beginning of June.
