Kyrgyz authorities should stabilize situation in country - Lavrov

RIA Novosti

16:38 22/06/2010 MINSK, June 22 (RIA Novosti) - Kyrgyz authorities should stabilize the situation in the country themselves, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Tuesday.

The statement came during a meeting with Belarusian Foreign Minister Sergei Martynov.

Earlier on Tuesday, Russia's envoy to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), Anvar Azimov, called on the Kyrgyz interim government to bring the country back to order.

"On its part, Russia will continue helping the Kyrgyz side to meet its humanitarian needs, provide technical assistance and consultations," Azimov said during an OSCE meeting in Vienna on Tuesday.

He added that further interethnic violence in Kyrgyzstan was possible.

"Obviously, the interim government has not yet managed to solve all the difficulties and eliminate the sources of unrest," Azimov said.

"That is why we cannot rule out the possibility of new interethnic clashes," he added.

Violent clashes between Kyrgyz and ethnic Uzbeks broke out in the southern Kyrgyz city of Osh on June 11, lasting several days and spreading to neighboring Jalalabad region. Official figures say 214 were killed in the clashes and more than 2,000 were injured, however Kyrgyz leaders admit that the real death toll could be 10 times higher.
