WASHINGTON (NNS) -- Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Washington broke ground June 15, on the Advanced Energetics Research Facility Laboratory Complex (P-167), the latest research laboratory at Naval Support Facility (NSF) Indian Head, Indian Head, Md.
The $9.5 million P-167 building is a part of an effort to revitalize and modernize NSF Indian Head, and will provide space for collaboration between engineers and scientists for more effective research and product development.
NAVFAC Washington awarded the design build contract to Sauer Incorporated in September 2008. Sauer submitted a final design in December 2009, and began pre-construction work in May 2010. NAVFAC Washington will manage the construction efforts.
"We have every reason to anticipate safe construction and a quality product," said Capt. Michael Weaver, NAVFAC Washington's public works officer at NSF Indian Head.
The 18,600 sq. foot facility will include a laboratory building, covered walkways and exterior storage units for hazardous materials and explosives. The laboratories will be vibration isolated, which will allow for precise optical and surface science research.
Sustainable design elements include energy management control systems, low impact design stormwater measures, use of local and recycled material, and high-efficiency mechanical systems. The complex will achieve at least LEED Silver designation.
