USS HARRY S. TRUMAN, At Sea (NNS) -- The German minister of defense, chief of German naval staff, and several members of the German media visited elements of the Harry S. Truman Strike Group (HSTCSG) June 14.

On the day of the birthday of the German navy, the group visited German frigate FGS Hessen (F221), and observed flight operations aboard USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75).

"Our visit to the Truman was very impressive," said Steffen Moritz, spokesperson for the German Press Information Offense. "We don't have anything like this in Germany. My favorite part was seeing the jets take off. Aside from being an amazing sight, it shows how well the ship can carry out its mission."

The guests and media toured the Truman flight deck, bridge, hangar bay, and primary flight control before having dinner.

Many members of the media dined on the mess decks with Truman's crew members to talk about life underway.

"We talked about the Icelandic volcano, the weather, World Cup soccer and berthings," said Electronics Technician Second Class (SW) Winters Lee Geimer, from Annapolis, Md., who volunteered for the special dinner. "My family is German, so I've always had a fascination with the German culture."

Geimer noted that during conversation it became apparent how similar the German and U.S. navies are in terms of organization and structure.

"I think it's very important to get to know our German friends," said Geimer. "I think sitting down and getting to know each other can give us a better friendship than any truce, treaty or bond could ever give."

"Cooperation seems to be the solution when it comes to teamwork and international missions," said Moritz. "The more we know about each other, the better we can work together."

Truman deployed May 21 as part of HSTCSG in support of Maritime Security Operations and theater security cooperation efforts in the U.S. 5th and 6th Fleet areas of responsibility. HSTCSG includes Commander, Carrier Strike Group 10, Harry S. Truman (CVN 75), Carrier Air Wing 3, Commander, Destroyer Squadron 26 and Hessen.
