VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (NNS) -- Underwater Construction Team (UCT) 1 held a change of command ceremony on board Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Ft. Story, Va., June 11.

Lt. Cmdr. William Butler relieved Lt. Cmdr. Gregory Miller as commanding officer of UCT 1.

Capt. Edward Brown, commander, 20th Seabee Readiness Group, gave the ceremony's keynote address.

"What I ask from UCT 1 is to continue to add another page in Seabee heritage," said Brown. "We are here to protect the heritage; we are here to add another page – we are an organization that is steeped in pride because we can do anything."

Before reading his orders and relinquishing command of UCT 1, Miller recounted his experience as commanding officer and the lessons he learned from the Sailors who he said made his tour a success.

"It's been a remarkable and very quick two years," said Miller. "Looking back on what this command has accomplished, its amazing how far we have come."

Since Miller took command of UCT 1 in 2008, the unit has deployed three times in support of earthquake disaster responses to Haiti and Chile. UCT 1 also completed three deployments to the Middle East and one to both Europe and Africa, providing construction, inspection and repair of ocean facilities such as wharves, piers, underwater pipelines, moorings and boat ramps.

After assuming command, Butler recognized Miller for his hard work and leadership as commanding officer of UCT 1 and challenged his Sailors to continue to do their best at every task before them.

"To the men and women of UCT 1, you should know that I consider the opportunity to join you and to lead you the opportunity of a lifetime," said Butler. "This is an outstanding command full of outstanding individuals – I'll expect nothing but the best from each of you, and I promise you will get nothing less from me."
