LITTLE CREEK-FORT STORY, Va. (NNS) -- Beach Master Unit (BMU) 2 held a change of command ceremony on Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story, Va., May 21.

Cmdr. Robert Brown relieved Cmdr. Richard Radice as commander, BMU 2.

"'This beach is mine' is the motto of Beach Master Unit 2, and all of the Sailors here are a critical link in any operation we do around the world," said Capt. Clayton Saunders, commander, Naval Beach Group 2. "Beach masters construct roads where none exist, create approach lanes to the beach and generally make things happen."

Radice has served as BMU 2 commander since September 2008.

"Overall I have to admit I've been dreading this day for the past two and a half years, because it means I have to leave the unit, which I believe to be the best in the United States Navy," said Radice.

BMU 2 has supported every major amphibious assault exercise since 1949 and most recently provided support to Operation Unified Response in Haiti following the 7.0 magnitude earthquake that struck the Caribbean nation Jan. 12.

"The two teams I took to Haiti had both within a month returned from seven and eight month deployments. There was not a lot of complaining when they were told that there was in earthquake in Haiti, and that we may be going," said Radice. "No complaints, just a lot of effort to get things ready to get themselves and their equipment ready to leave."
