GUAM (NNS) -- The amphibious assault ship USS Peleliu (LHA 5), flagship of the Peleliu Amphibious Ready Group (PEL ARG), amphibious dock landing ship USS Pearl Harbor (LSD 52) and amphibious transport dock ship USS Dubuque (LPD 8) departed Guam June 9 after a supply pickup and four-day liberty call.

The ships picked up some items in Guam that they were not able to get prior to departing San Diego, said Cmdr. Tim Daniels, Peleliu's supply officer.

"Some of the supplies include high priority aviation parts that are needed to help support our mission ahead. Due to the tropical climate, we are going to be receiving a variety of things including malaria medications, sunscreen and bug spray," said Daniels.

Naval Base Guam has refueling capabilities as well as a logistics support infrastructure. Everything from fresh vegetables and milk to new fans for the ship's gym were loaded by crane.

"It's rewarding to work with such an outstanding team of Sailors and Marines, and it's important that we focus on their needs to help keep morale up," said Daniels.

Mail was another item that Sailors and Marines were happy to receive.

"We picked up about 508 kilos of mail," said Logistics Specialist 3rd Class Robert Jordan. "It's a small amount because it's only about a week's worth, but it definitely helps lift morale. You can tell that people are excited by looking at the line outside the window. It's nice to see people smile and open up goodies from home."

The PEL ARG is currently on a scheduled Western Pacific deployment with a variety of missions outlined in the nation's Maritime Strategy, including combat missions, humanitarian assistance and promoting peace and stability in the region.

Other elements of the PEL ARG include Commander, Amphibious Squadron 3, the command element; Fleet Surgical Team 1; Tactical Air Control Squadron 11; Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 23, Detachment 5; Assault Craft Unit 1, Detachment F; Assault Craft Unit 5, Detachment B and Beachmaster Unit 1, Detachment D.

The 7th Fleet Area of Responsibility includes more than 52 million square miles of the Pacific Ocean, running from the International Date Line to the eastern coast of Africa, and from the Antarctic to the Kuril Islands, northeast of Japan.

While in 7th Fleet, PEL ARG reports to Rear Adm. Richard Landolt, commander, Amphibious Force 7th Fleet, who is headquartered in Okinawa, Japan.
