Two more British soldiers killed in Afghanistan

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

London, June 5, IRNA -- Another two British soldiers have been killed in the Helmand province of southern Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence announced Saturday.

The soldiers, part of the newly-formed Combined Force Nahr-e Saraj (South) under US command, died on Friday afternoon in an exchange of fire with insurgent forces.

The latest deaths bring the total number of British troops killed in Afghanistan to 292 since the overthrow of the Taliban regime in 2001.

The US took over control of some 8,000 British troops in Helmand province at the beginning of June as part of a restructuring of Nato forces, with command in southern Afghanistan being split into two.

The newly-formed command structure suffered its first fatality on Wednesday when a British soldier killed in an explosion in the Sangin district on Wednesday.

On Friday, Afghanistan's three-day peace jirga came to a close with delegates calling for ceasefires and prisoner releases, and for the Afghan government and insurgents to start talking to each other.
