CORONADO, Calif. (NNS) -- A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held May 14 to celebrate the completion of Naval Special Warfare Group (NSWG) 4 Special Boat Team (SBT) 12 Operational Storage Facility at Naval Amphibious Base Coronado.

Guest speakers for the ceremony included SBT-12 Commanding Officer Cmdr. Jeffrey B. Drinkard, Lt. Cmdr. Chris Croke, R.A. Burch Construction Inc. Project Manager Trevor Clarke, and SBT-12 Command Master Chief M.A. Albelo.

Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Southwest awarded a $11.6 million contract June 11, 2008 to R.A. Burch Construction Co Inc. to design and build a 3,700 square meter multi-story operational storage facility.

"The project was managed safely and successfully with help from Facilities Engineering Acquisition Division at Naval Air Station North Island," said Clarke. "This project was on time, under budget, with no safety issues, and is a fantastic new facility that is already appreciated by the end user."

The goal of the project was to upgrade and modernize the personal storage facility for the newest special operation warrior community, the Special Warfare Combatant Craft Crewman (SWCC). The SWCC, and their warfare device, were introduced into NSWG-4 in November 2001. NAVFAC Southwest procured funding for a state-of-the-art operational storage facility that would meet the highly flexible and expeditionary needs of SBT-12. A 38,656 square-foot facility was efficiently designed and constructed by Wildman & Morris and R.A. Burch Construction.

The project included the relocation of SBT-12 personnel and gear to a temporary facility. Demolition of an existing facility was completed which included asbestos, lead abatement, and soil densification through use of stone columns.

"The facility truly is a state-of-the-art operational storage facility that encompasses the particular needs of SBT-12," said Drinkard.

The two-story structure is a steel frame with concrete masonry unit running from the ground to eight feet where it connects to insulate metal wall panels. Natural Light beams through translucent panels to aid the environmentally friendly design. The facility is scheduled to receive Silver Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council for its "green" design, planning, and construction practices.

Utilities associated with the facility include a freight elevator, fire protection system, NIPR/SIPR network and telephone connections, and heating ventilation air conditioning with humidity control.

Storage includes 160 individual open storage cages with secure drying cages and secure storage rooms for each detachment. The new building was also equipped with male rest rooms, outdoor and indoor shower areas, washers and dryers, computer rooms, bunk rooms, and a break area, kitchen, laundry facilities, bunk rooms, and a computer room. Site improvements feature new concrete walkways and curbs, asphalt, bollards, a brick paved parking area, storm water management, and bike racks.
