WASHINGTON (NNS) -- Naval Facilities Engineering Command Washington participated in a groundbreaking ceremony for the P-166 Energetics Systems and Technology Laboratory Complex Phase I at Naval Support Facility Indian Head, Md., May 24.

The three story facility will serve the needs of 100 engineering personnel to include lab space, inert work space, office space and a secure area. It will consolidate engineers and scientists and provide convenient access for collaboration in research and product development. The building will be LEED Silver certified with geothermal and ground source heating.

"Thank you for inviting me to participate in this important milestone for P-166," said Capt. Michael Weaver, South Potomac public works officer at NAVFAC Washington. "We are currently in the final stages of design."

The $11.6 million construction is scheduled to begin July 2010 on a 23 acre site. The contractor is Amatea/Grimberg Joint Venture.

"Grimberg has proven to us time and time again their commitment to safety," said Weaver. "We have every reason to anticipate safe construction and a quality product based on Grimberg's past experience with us."

NAVFAC Washington is responsible for both the design and construction oversight. When the construction is complete, NAVFAC will take on the role of facilities maintenance for the complex, according to Lt. Charity Anderson, facilities engineering and acquisition division director, NAVFAC Washington.
