Israeli Army Re-Opens Highway to Palestinians
VOA News 28 May 2010
Israel's army has re-opened part of a major highway in the West Bank to Palestinians after a years' long ban.
Several Palestinians on Thursday drove on Highway 443 for the first time in roughly a decade. The road runs from Jerusalem to Tel-Aviv.
But human rights group say Israeli checkpoints still restrict Palestinian access to some areas.
The Israeli army says it has complied with a ruling by Israel's Supreme Court that lifted the ban on Palestinian traffic on Highway 443. The Association for Civil Rights in Israel had appealed to the court on behalf of Palestinians.
Israel closed the road to Palestinians following a series of 2002 shooting attacks on Israeli vehicles on the road.
