SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- Assault Craft Unit (ACU) 1 said farewell to Landing Craft Utility (LCU) 1630, 1633, 1635, and 1665 as they left San Diego May 22 for a scheduled seven-month western Pacific deployment aboard USS Peleliu (LHA 5).

This deployment of four craft is in addition to LCU-1629, which deployed on 18 May with USS Dubuque, creating a five craft detachment with the Peleliu Amphibious Ready Group (ARG).

"It is always difficult to leave loved ones behind but we are war fighters by trade and are always proud to answer the world's 911 call," said Culinary Specialist 1st Class Benedict Verceles. "My family supports this and understands that freedom is not always free."

ACU-1 was tasked with the challenge to provide five LCU in support of the Peleliu ARG, and this deployment serves as a testimony to the dedication and hard work required to prepare the craft and crews.

"It has been a challenge from personnel, material and training during the last six months to prepare the five craft, and two others to deploy in the summer. But as always, ACU-1 was prepared and got the job done," said Lt. Cmdr Paul Sumagaysay.

The Landing Craft Utility will be a key part of the amphibious forces required to transport Marines from the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit and their equipment from ship to shore throughout the deployment.

Other elements of PELARG include Fleet Surgical Team 1; Tactical Air Control Squadron 11; Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 23, Detachment 5; Assault Craft Unit 5, Detachment B and Beach Master Unit 1, Detachment D.
