Kyrgyz deputy PM says runaway criminals freed to kill him

RIA Novosti

13:3325/05/2010 BISHKEK, May 25 (RIA Novosti) - First deputy head of the Kyrgyz interim government Almazbek Atambayev said on Tuesday three runaway criminals, who escaped from a Bishkek prison on Monday, were set free to kill him.

The prison convoy was attacked by gunmen in the Kyrgyz capital on Monday killing one prison officer. The runaway criminals had been sentenced for carrying out a series of killings, including the murder of Kyrgyz Parliamentary Deputy Ruslan Shabotoyev in 2008.

"I received a call from [National Security Service Chief] Dushebayev who told me why the three murderers had been freed," Atambayev said.

He said the runaways from the "organized escape" could be used to attack him and that his life was in danger.

Violence and political uprisings have become commonplace in Kyrgyzstan since a series of bloody uprisings led to the overthrow of the government in early April, leaving more than 80 dead. An interim government was formed and ousted President Kurmanbek Bakiyev fled the capital and later the country.
