
Underwood Donates Project Handclasp Items to Colombia

BAHIA MALAGA, Colombia (NNS) -- USS Underwood (FFG-36) and embarked Helicopter Squadron Anti-Submarine Light 60 (HSL 60) delivered Project Handclasp items to Colombian sailors for distribution to coastal communities in the surrounding area May 4-6.
Underwood Sailors delivered the donation of medical and hygiene products during a Theater Security Cooperation (TSC) exercise with the Colombian navy.
"I work with various charitable organizations to bring donations to the Colombian people," said Colombian Navy Lt. Cmdr. Victor Arango, public affairs officer at Bahia Malaga Naval Station. "The donations give the people faith in the Colombian Navy."
Project Handclasp provided Underwood with the materials for humanitarian assistance to countries in need during its 2010 deployment.
With the support of various public organizations, charity corporations and citizen donations, Project Handclasp coordinates the delivery of a variety of items from books and toys to medical and hygiene products via transportation by U.S. Navy ships and aircraft to countries across the globe.
Underwood, homeported in Mayport, Fla., and HSL-60 are deployed for Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command (COMUSNAVSO) conducting counter-illicit trafficking (CIT) operations for Joint Interagency Task Force-South in the Eastern Pacific.
COMUSNAVSO is the naval component command for U.S. Southern Command and is responsible for all naval personnel and assets in the area of responsibility. COMUSNAVSO conducts a variety of missions in support of the Maritime Strategy, including TSC, relationship building, humanitarian assistance and disaster response, community relations, and CIT operations.
