KANDAHAR, Afghanistan (NNS) -- Seabees from Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 133 assisted U.S. Air Force's 809th Red Horse Squadron in completing the Stryker Brigade Headquarters Facility March 27 while deployed to Afghanistan.
Due to weather delays and material availability, the project fell behind schedule. Seabees were asked to assist, providing the Seabees an opportunity to work alongside their U.S. Air Force engineering counterparts while providing first-hand construction experience for junior Seabees.
The Seabees' efforts were spearheaded by Builder 1st Class Shaun Monkress, project superintendent and Steelworker 1st Class Nathan Morano, project crew leader, who coordinated workloads with Air Force personnel and returned the project back on schedule.
The project included constructing eight Southwest Asia (SWA) huts and other facilities. NMCB 133 Echo Company Seabees were tasked to complete the basic framework and finish all electrical and carpentry work in three of the eight SWA huts.
Seabees involvement in the project began March 21. NMCB 133 Echo Company Seabees hung 1,200 sheets of plywood sheathing for walls and ceilings, installed two 400 amp and two 100 amp electrical panels, and installed 6,500 feet of electrical cable which terminated at 208 receptacles, 46 switches and 146 lighting fixtures in just seven days.
These efforts proved instrumental in completing the project, demonstrating the teamwork and construction capabilities of the Seabees as well as the interoperability of the Navy and Air Force construction teams.
