IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Srinagar, India, May 18, IRNA -- The Indian army claimed a major victory saying it had busted a militant hideout in the continuing military operation in north Kashmir which has left 11 militants and three soldiers dead so far.

Briefing newsmen at its Shareef Abad headquarters, a top officer of the military's Kilo Force said that the operation, code named "Thunder Storm" going on for the past month, had been launched after receiving specific reports about infiltration of a large number of militants into north Kashmir from across the line of control that divides Kashmir between India and Pakistan.

Major General N George, Chief of Kilo Force said that 13 rifles, 19 AK 47 rifles, three 303s, 1000 rounds of ammunition and 10 grenades had been recovered from a hideout in the Hafruda forests in Kupwara district.

Giving details of the ensuing gun battles in Rafiabad, Dogarpora, Mawar and Sanzipora, which followed in quick succession from may 5, the officer said that the operation was successful with the militant toll of 11, even though the army had lost three of its men.

A major military operation was on in the Wudar Bala area of Handwara since Sunday, but bad weather was hampering the searches, he said.
