Police: Maoists Blow Up Bus in Central India

VOA News
17 May 2010

Police say Maoist rebels have blown up a bus in central India, killing at least 20 people, including police officers.

The attack took place Monday in the Dantewada area of Chhattisgarh, one of the states hit worst by the Maoist insurgency.

Police say civilians and special police officers, who are recruited from the civilian population, were among those killed in the landmine blast.

Indian Home Secretary Gopal Krishna Pillai condemned the "killing and targeting of innocent civilians." He said seven of the bus passengers had been hospitalized with serious injuries.

Last month, Maoists ambushed soldiers in Chhattisgarh, killing 76 soldiers.

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has called the Maoist insurgency, which has spread to 20 of the country's 28 states, the country's most serious domestic security issue. The rebels, also known as Naxalites, are demanding land and jobs for the poor.
