Russia to help Kyrgyzstan recover from riots

RIA Novosti

17:1917/05/2010 BISHKEK, May 17 (RIA Novosti) - Russia has prepared a package of measures to ensure stability in Kyrgyzstan after a series of deadly riots, a special envoy of the Russian president said on Monday.

"We are discussing economic, political and humanitarian aid to stabilize the situation in the country," Vladimir Rushailo said, adding that the package is aimed at helping the country as a whole, "not just certain individuals."

He welcomed international efforts in returning stability to the country where a bloody uprising led to the overthrow of the government in early April. The situation worsened last week when administrative buildings in three southern regions - deposed President Kurmanbek Bakiyev's former power base - were stormed by his supporters.

"We stand in solidarity with the work being carried out by international advisers to draft the republic's [new] constitution. We consider this work very positive. Our experts are also involved in it," he said.

He also welcomed UN efforts at reducing poverty by creating more jobs in Kyrgyzstan and its attempts to work with the country's youth to prevent further uprisings.

"The UN efforts are certainly positive. We will support them," Rushailo said.
