EVERETT, Wash. (NNS) -- Navy officials and children from the Naval Station Everett Child Development Center (CDC) cut the ribbon for the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA)-funded toddler room expansion May 10.
The ARRA supports project funding for Department of Defense Programs such as military construction and energy conservation investment while creating jobs and contributing for America's economic recovery. The $1.1 million expansion and climate system upgrade provides more than 2,000 additional square feet and room for 28 more children at the center.
Capt. Thomas Mascolo, NAVSTA Everett commanding officer, said the project is not just an expansion, it is a complete upgrade to the utilities of the building including air conditioning, heating and ventilation, to help with the base's energy consumption.
"Besides improving energy efficiency and conservation, the new space ensures that parents have a secure and healthy environment for their children to spend their tender early years in the care of a professional and dedicated staff," Mascolo said.
Judy McDonald, director, installation program manager for Child and Youth Programs on NAVSTA Everett, thanked all involved for their teamwork.
"It was a partnership, and it was a good one," she said. "[The contractor] worked very considerately with the center for our hours and being around all the kids."
Guests, including Everett Mayor Ray Stephanson, toured the new rooms.
Michelle Lowery, a toddler-room care provider said the expansion is great for her kids.
"There's more room for the kids to really experience and develop," she said.
