Kyrgyzstan Asks Latvia To Detain Ousted Leader's Son

May 10, 2010

Kyrgyzstan has asked Latvia to detain the son of ousted Kyrgyz leader Kurmanbek Bakiev.

Andrejs Vasks, a spokesman for the Prosecutor General's Office, said Kyrgyzstan had issued a temporary detention request against Maksim Bakiev.

Vasks said he had no information on whether Maksim Bakiev was in the country. He added that his office had asked the Kyrgyz side for clarification, describing its request as "unclear and contradictory."

Maksim Bakiev has been implicated in a corruption scandal involving fuel delivery to the U.S. air base Kyrgyzstan.

Former President Kurmanbek Bakiev was toppled in an uprising last month and has since fled to Belarus.
