British marine killed in Afghan explosion
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
London, May 10, IRNA – A British marine has been killed in an explosion while on foot patrol in Sangin, Helmand province in southern Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence has announced.
The soldier was taking part in an operation conducted in support of the Afghan National Army seeking to provide security to local nationals on Sunday.
The latest killing brings the British death toll in Afghanistan to 40 so far this year and to 285 since the overthrow of the Taliban regime in 2001.
It comes as British political leaders are involved in negotiations to form a new government after last week’s elections ended in deadlock, but whatever the composition it is not expected to affect the overall war strategy in Afghanistan.
