Air Operations in Afghanistan

Asadabad, Regional Command - East
A U.S. Air Force B-1B Lancer aircrew provided armed overwatch and close air support for friendly forces and a friendly-forces convoy previously hit with an improvised explosive device. Friendly forces reported receiving enemy fire and aircrews observed several enemy positions actively engaged against friendly forces. The aircrew released precision-guided munitions, destroying enemy positions. A show of presence was conducted over the convoy. Joint terminal attack controllers declared the actions

Sangin, RC-S
U.S. Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt II pilots provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. Pilots observed an improvised explosive device detonation and conducted shows of force, with flares launched, that ground controllers declared successful.

Oruzgan, RC-S
U.S. Navy F/A-18C Hornet pilots provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. Pilots conducted a show of force, with flares launched, to deter enemy action after friendly forces reported an attack. Ground controllers declared the action successful.

Remak, RC-E
U.S. Air Force F-15E Strike Eagle aircrews provided armed overwatch for friendly forces and a friendly-forces convoy and patrol clearing an improvised explosive device. Aircrews conducted a show of presence. Aircrews later conducted a show of force to break contact with hostile forces. Both actions were determined successful by ground controllers.

Bagram, RC-E
U.S. Air Force F-16C Fighting Falcon pilots provided armed overwatch for friendly forces and a friendly-forces convoy hit by an IED. Pilots conducted a show of force, with flares launched, to deter enemy action. Later, friendly forces reported an enemy engagement and pilots released a precision-guided munition, destroying an enemy position. When enemy fire returned, pilots released another precision-guided munition and conducted a show of force to end the enemy fire. Joint terminal attack controllers confirmed the pilot's actions were successful.

Soltani, RC-E
U.S. Air Force F-15-E aircrews provided armed overwatch for a friendly-forces foot patrol and medical evacuation operation. Aircrews conducted shows of force to deter enemy fire. Friendly forces reported enemy small-arms and mortar fire continuing from several enemy positions so aircrews released precision-guided munitions against target coordinates. The enemy positions were eliminated and the enemy fire ceased.

Mata Khan, RC-E
U.S. Air Force F-15E aircrews provided armed overwatch for a friendly-forces convoy. Aircrews conducted a show of force to deter anti-Afghan forces activity. Ground controllers determined the show of force was successful.

Ghazni, RC-E
U.S. Air Force F-15E aircrews provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. Aircrews conducted a show of force, with flares launched, to deter enemy action. U.S. Navy F/A-18E Super Hornet aircrews also conducted a show of force. Ground controllers reported the shows of force were successful.

Gereshk, RC-S
Coalition aircrews provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. Aircrews conducted a show of force, with flares launched, to deter enemy activity. Ground controllers determined the show of force was successful.

Farah, RC-W
U.S. Navy F/A-18F Super Hornet aircrews provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. Aircrews conducted a show of force, which ground controllers determined was successful.

Lashkar Gah, RC-S
U.S. Navy F/A-18E Super Hornet aircrews provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. Aircrews conducted a show of force that ground controllers reported as successful.

Airlift Action

Oruzgan Province, RC-S
A U.S. Air Force C-17 Globemaster III aircrew flew a combat-airdrop mission in Oruzgan Province, Afghanistan, delivering approximately 70,000 pounds of combat-sustainment supplies to friendly forces.
