From Supervisor of Shipbuilding, Conversion and Repair, Groton Public Affairs

GROTON, Conn. (NNS) -- The U.S. Navy's supervisor of Shipbuilding, Conversion and Repair (SUPSHIP) Groton, Conn., General Dynamics Electric Boat (EB), and the crew of USS Hartford (SSN 768) achieved a major milestone April 30.

The ship was undocked following structural repairs from damage sustained during a 2009 collision

"Undocking marks the transition from major structural and mechanical repairs into combat system restoration for an on-time return of Hartford to the Fleet," said Capt. Les Elkin, SUPSHIP Groton.

The repair effort to date has included the removal and replacement of the sail with a newly fabricated sail from EB's Quonset Point facility. A sizable section of pressure hull below the sail was replaced. EB also completely restored the port retractable bow plane and associated operating gear and nearby ballast tank hull structure.

The ship was docked at EB, July 13, 2009, to complete the damage assessment and begin repairs. The submarine's restoration is scheduled to complete in November 2010.

A field activity of Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), SUPSHIP Groton executes Navy shipbuilding contracts to ensure the highest quality ships are delivered to the fleet. NAVSEA's four SUPSHIPs are co-located with major shipbuilders and are the Navy's on-site technical, contractual and business authority.
