OSCE ready to contribute to Kyrgyz reform process

RIA Novosti

14:14 05/05/2010 MOSOCW, May 5 (RIA Novosti) - The political situation in Kyrgyzstan will be discussed at a forthcoming meeting of the Organization of Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), the Kazakh Foreign Minister, who currently chairs the organization, said on Wednesday.

The meeting of OSCE foreign ministers will be held in the Kazakh city of Alma-Ata on June 16-17. Kanat Saudabayev said the main spheres for possible OSCE expansion in Kyrgyzstan

are security, the creation of economic and environmental programs, constitutional reform, support in election processes, and the monitoring of human rights.

"We need to focus on providing security, restoring business activity and returning internal political processes to the legal field, first and foremost by legitimizing the interim government," Saydabayev said. "Without this it is hard to restore the trust of the international community and reduce tensions across the country."

He praised the work of the OSCE center in Bishkek for keeping the organization informed on events in Kyrgyzstan.

"At the OSCE Permanent Council session in Vienna on April 14 it was observed that the work carried out by The Kazakh chair is the first successful example of cooperation between international entities in regulating conflict situations in the former Soviet Union," Saudabayev said.

Violent uprisings broke out in Kyrgyzstan on April 6, spreading across the country and lasting several days. Former President Kurmankbek Bakiyev was deposed and forced to flee the capital and later the country. An interim government was formed under Roza Otumbayeva.
