Kyrgyz interim government strips Bakiyev of presidential immunity
15:1704/05/2010 BISHKEK, May 4 (RIA Novosti) - Kyrgyzstan's interim government on Tuesday stripped ousted Kurmanbek Bakiyev of presidential immunity and instructed the country's top prosecutors to have him extradited to the republic.
Bakiyev was officially charged in absentia on April 27 of organizing murders and abuse of power in the ex-Soviet Central Asian republic.
Interim Prime Minister Roza Otunbayeva signed the relevant decree, which says in part that Bakiyev "allowed peaceful nationals to be shot and thus deprived himself of the status of ex-president and of immunity."
The ousted Kyrgyz leader, who fled the Central Asian republic amid bloody unrest in early April that left over 80 dead and is currently taking refuge in Belarus, has refused to resign.
The Kyrgyz interim government recently offered rewards of up to $100,000 for information leading to the capture of ex-officials, including relatives of deposed president Bakiyev.
Bakiyev's three brothers and his son, Maksim, former head of the state investment authority, are among those on the wanted list, a spokesman said.
Ex-prime minister Daniyar Usenov and former Chief of National Security Murat Sutalinov are also wanted on charges of ordering the murders of opposition protestors.
