Air Operations in Afghanistan
Konduz, Regional Command-North
U.S. Air Force 16-C Fighting Falcon pilots provided armed overwatch for friendly forces and a friendly forces patrol. Pilots conducted a show of presence over the friendly patrol and later made a strafing run against an improvised-explosive device location.
Asmar, RC-E
U.S. Air Force F-15E Strike Eagle aircrews provided armed overwatch for friendly forces and friendly-forces convoys. Friendly forces reported receiving enemy fire and passed confirmed enemy position coordinates to the aircrews. Aircrews released precision-guided munitions against enemy targets and neutralized them. When a friendly convoy struck an improvised explosive device and started taking enemy fire, aircrews confirmed enemy position coordinates and released precision-guided munitions against enemy targets. Enemy contact with friendly forces was broken and enemy fire ceased. Aircrews conducted a show of force to continue deterrence of enemy activity in area of the convoy. Ground control confirmed the actions successful when no enemy fire occurred.
Asadabad, RC-E
U.S. F-16C pilots provided armed overwatch for friendly forces and a friendly-forces convoy. Pilots coordinated with ground controllers to suppress and terminate enemy fire against friendly forces while protecting the convoy. Precision-guided munitions were released and enemy positions were destroyed. A show of force was conducted to ensure no further enemy aggression. Ground controllers confirmed the success of all engagements.
Later, U.S. F-16C pilots and F-15E aircrews provided armed overwatch for friendly forces and a friendly-forces convoy recovery operation. When the friendly-forces recovery team reported enemy fire from several enemy positions, the points of origin were confirmed and aircrews released precision-guided munitions, which destroyed the enemy positions. The enemy fire ceased and aircrews conducted shows of force and a show of presence to ensure no further enemy aggression occurred until the friendly convoy recovery operation was complete. Ground controllers confirmed success of all engagements.
Bagram, RC-E
F-15E aircrews provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. Aircrews conducted a show of force, with flares launched, to break hostile enemy contact against friendly forces. The show of force was confirmed successful by ground controllers.
Monari, RC-S
A U.S. Air Force B-1B Lancer aircrew provided close air support and armed overwatch for a friendly forces convoy struck by an improvised explosive device. The aircrew conducted a show of presence over the convoy to deter enemy action and reassure friendly forces air power was overhead. The show of presence was confirmed successful by ground controllers.
Abu Kala, RC-E
U.S. Air Force F-16C pilots provided armed overwatch for friendly forces and a friendly-forces convoy. Pilots conducted a show of force to deter enemy activity during a town hall meeting. Pilots also conducted a show of presence over the convoy to reassure friendly force air power was overhead. The show of force and show of presence were confirmed successful by ground controllers.
Sangin, RC-S
Coalition aircrews provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. Aircrews conducted a show of force to deter enemy action. Ground controllers declared the show of force successful.
Chahar Bagh, RC-E
Coalition and U.S. Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt II pilots provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. Pilots conducted shows of force, with flares launched, to deter enemy aggression. The shows of force were confirmed successful by joint terminal attack controllers.
Airlift Action
Helmand Province, RC-E
A U.S. Air Force C-17 Globemaster III aircrews flew combat-airdrop missions in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, delivering approximately 120,000 pounds of combat-sustainment supplies to friendly forces.
Zabul Province, RC-S
A U.S. Air Force C-130 Hercules aircrew and a C-17 Globemaster III aircrew flew combat-airdrop missions in Zabul Province, Afghanistan, delivering approximately 35,000 pounds and approximately 71,000 pounds of combat-sustainment supplies to friendly forces.
