PORT HUENEME Calif. (NNS) -- Seabees from Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 3 Charlie Company engage in unit driven training (UDT) during their homeport period at Naval Base Ventura County's Port Hueneme, Calif., March 30.

UDT is training planned and executed within the battalion during their inter-deployment homeport training cycle.

Homeport training is essential to the success of the battalion. All of the training covered is geared to benefit Seabees while in homeport and to help ensure their success on upcoming deployments. It covers a vast array of skills and knowledge, from basic first aid to money management.

"Training is always a good way to build teamwork while also allowing troops to gain knowledge and hands on experience in a certain subject," said Builder 1st Class (SCW) Andrew Wilson.

The instructors for the classes are usually junior Sailors within the battalion. This gives each Seabee a chance to develop their public speaking skills and helps further their knowledge in the subject area. Once the Sailor selects their training topic, they research and devise a training plan for the day including arranging what logistic support and teaching aids are required for the class.

"After researching money management, I realized how I could have made better decisions in the past," stated Builder 3rd Class Michael Connor.

Builder Constructionman (SCW) Cameron Burrows instructed a course on basic first aid. The class consisted of treatment for heat casualties and victims of shock, as well as proper application of tourniquets and pressure dressings. All these skills are extremely important in preparing the Seabees of NMCB 3 for a deployment to Afghanistan in November 2010.

"I enjoy teaching a subject that could potentially save someone's life," said Burrows. "It is good to know that the troops around me know the proper way to provide first aid support."

NMCB 3 is one of the Navy Expeditionary Combat Command's warfighting support elements, providing host nation construction operations and security in support of overseas contingency operations.
