PORT HUENEME, Calif. (NNS) -- Sailors in Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 3's headquarters company conducted unit driven training in Port Hueneme, Calif., April 15 to prepare them for their upcoming Afghanistan deployment in November 2010.

Headquarters company consists of fleet support departments including supply, gunners mates and administrative personnel, who are a vital part of the battalion's day-to-day operations.

Just as shipboard life requires all hands to have a thorough knowledge of damage control, Seabees require all hands to know how to set up, operate and live in a field environment.

As such, Sailors with fleet rates are actually considered Seabees while they are attached to a mobile construction battalion.

The unit driven training was to teach the headquarters Seabees how to construct the modular general purpose tent system (MGPTS). These tents are used in the field for living, work spaces and the battalion galley.

While in homeport, NMCB 3's primary focus is training and safety. For the inexperienced, the MGPTS is a difficult tent to set up but with teamwork and training it's much easier. NMCB 3 headquarters company is one step closer to a successful field training exercise in August 2010 and for an Afghanistan deployment in November 2010.

"After this training, I now have to confidence to set up a MGPTS," said Logistics Specialist 1st class (SW/AW) Kitt Jenest, with NMCB 3's Supply Department. "I also learned about what to expect on our field exercise and deployment."

NMCB 3 is one of the Navy Expeditionary Combat Command's warfighting support elements, providing host nation construction operations and security in support of overseas contingency operations.
