CORONADO, Calif. (NNS) -- A ceremony celebrating the completion of the newly renovated Berth Lima at Naval Base Coronado (NBC) North Island was held April 9 in Coronado, Calif.
Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Southwest Commanding Officer Capt. Keith Hamilton, Coronado City Mayor Casey Tanaka and NBC Commanding Officer Capt. Yancy Lindsey celebrated the completion of the project with the ceremonial smashing of a champagne bottle on a pier bollard.
NAVFAC Southwest awarded the $22.99 million pier project Feb. 6, 2009, to Barnhart Construction in San Diego.
The pier project included site improvements to the pavement, fendering system, a quay wall fence, perimeter security lighting and sidewalks.
"It was a great experience being part of the project team," said Brian Javier, NAVFAC Southwest construction manager for the project. "The long hours everyone put into the project was well worth it."
The project included demolition of reinforced concrete fender panels and existing bollards and installation of a new concrete fender pile system and replacement bollards. Additionally, the demolition of existing pavement, new asphalt and concrete paving, platform void repair along the pier and the repair and upgrades to sewer and civil utilities and vehicle parking areas, sidewalks, curbs, gutters and drainage infrastructure were all part of the renovation.
New security fencing, high mast security lighting and associated surveillance infrastructure were also installed, and mechanical utilities were addressed during the renovation, including the repair of existing steam and compressed air systems, extension of the potable water system, relocation and upgrade of the waste water and oily waste system, extension of the pure water system and capping off the existing JP-5 fuel risers.
Building facilities created during the project included a security building, restroom and payphone building, pump house building, two steel watch towers, two guard houses and two electrical substations.
