Gunmen attack NATO oil tankers, 4 policemen killed: police

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Islamabad, April 24, IRNA -- Unidentified gunmen in Pakistan’s eastern Punjab province Saturday night attacked tankers carrying oil for NATO troops in Afghanistan, a senior police officer said.

Four policemen were killed and four tankers caught fire, Regional Police Officer Aslam Tarin said.

The tankers came under attack at Talagang, a small town in Punjab province, as they were at a patrol station to get fuel, he said.

The patrol station also caught fire as the result of firing.

Tarin said that a sub-inspector and three policemen were killed during exchange of fire with the gunmen.

No group claimed responsibility for the attack. Suspected militants had attacked NATO supplies trucks and oil tankers in the past.

The police officer said that the gunmen arrived at the patrol station in two pick-up vehicles and opened fire at the NATO oil tankers. A police party rushed to the attack site on receiving information, he said.

The gunmen fled after the shooting and the police blocked all roads to trace the attackers, he said.

Suspected militants had in the past attacked NATO trucks in northwest Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa and southwestern Balochisran province, both bordering Afghanistan. But it is the first time that NATO oil tankers were attacked in Punjab.
