COCHIN, India (NNS) -- The Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Adm. Gary Roughead visited the naval forces of India April 10-16.

The purpose of CNO's visit was to strengthen the maritime partnership between the nations, visit training facilities and continue increased cooperation with the Indian navy.

CNO met with his counterpart Chief of Naval Staff (CNS) of the Indian Navy Adm. Nirmal Kumar Verma.

"The strong relationship our navies enjoy today would not exist without trust and an open dialogue between the leaders of both our navies," said Roughead.

In India, CNO toured Indian Navy Ship (INS) Viraat, Naval Base Karwar, and visited the Navigation and Direction School at INS Garuda to see how the Indian naval forces train and educate their officers and sailors.

"Training is a great priority for me," said Roughead. "Training is a great priority for our Navy and I'm always keenly interested in visiting other people's navies, talking with professionals, talking with those in training- because we all do the same thing."

CNO said the visit was a great opportunity to again meet with the Indian navy and show the US Navy's commitment of partnership.
