JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (NNS) -- A groundbreaking ceremony was held at Naval Air Station (NAS) Jacksonville April 9 to begin construction on the new P-8A Poseidon Multi-Mission Maritime Aircraft Integrated Training Center. The P-8A Poseidon aircraft will begin replacing the P-3 Orion in 2012.

NAS Jacksonville Commanding Officer Capt. Jack Scorby Jr., along with several of the Navy's top leadership in aviation, discussed the new project prior to picking up the ceremonial shovels to break ground.

"This just further cements the importance of NAS Jacksonville, not only within the community but within the U.S. Navy," said Scorby.

The new facility will accommodate 10 operational simulators, eight weapon's tactics simulators and four part task trainers.

"I really want to thank the local community, the base, base commander and everyone who enabled us to get to this point," said Rear Adm. Bill Moran, commander, Patrol and Reconnaissance Group, who served as guest speaker. "This facility is very important to the Navy."

The $38 million, 165,000- square-foot facility has many special features including being a "green" building. This means the new facility will be "Silver" certified in compliance with Leadership Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) building standards which were developed in the 1990s by the United States Green Building Council. LEED is a certification system for environmentally friendly construction, indicating the project meets or exceeds government mandates as well as industry standards.

The new training facility is scheduled to be completed the summer of 2011.
