4/12/2010 - SOUTHWEST ASIA -- Coalition airpower integrated with ground forces in Iraq and the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan in the following operations April 10 according to Combined Air and Space Operations Center officials here.
Air Operations in Afghanistan
Morghab, Regional Command-West
U.S. Air Force F-16C Fighting Falcon pilots, B-1B Lancer aircrews and U.S. Navy F/A-18F Super Hornet aircrews provided armed overwatch for friendly ground forces. Pilots and aircrews responded to reports of enemy fire directed against friendly ground forces. Several shows of force, some with flares launched, were conducted to deter enemy action in the area. A B-1B aircrew released several precision-guided munitions against enemy fighting positions using heavy fire against friendly forces. The B-1B aircrew also provided armed overwatch for a convoy that had encountered an improvised explosive device.
Konduz, RC-N
U.S. Air Force F-16C pilots provided armed overwatch for friendly forces in the area. The pilots observed enemy forces carrying weapons in the vicinity of friendly forces. Several strafing runs were made to eliminate the threat to friendly forces.
Asmar, RC-E
U.S Air Force F-15E Strike Eagle aircrews provided armed overwatch for friendly forces and Coalition forces at several friendly fighting positions throughout the area. When anti-Afghan forces were observed approaching friendly forces, aircrews released precision-guided munitions to eliminate the threat to friendly forces. Later, additional enemy activity led to precision-guided munitions being released to neutralize threats to friendly forces. When Coalition forces reported receiving enemy small-arms fire, precision-guided munitions were released against the active enemy fighting positions, destroying the positions and ending enemy fire.
Sol Tani, RC-E
U.S. Air Force F-15E aircrews provided armed overwatch for friendly forces and a friendly-forces dismounted patrol. The aircrews conducted shows of force to deter anti-Afghan forces activity in the vicinity. The shows of force were declared successful by joint terminal attack controllers.
Shinkay, RC-S
U.S. Navy F/A-18C Hornet pilots provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. At the direction of friendly ground forces, pilots conducted a show of force to deter enemy action. The show of force was reported successful.
Sheykhabad, RC-E
F-15E aircrews provided armed overwatch for a friendly-forces dismounted patrol. A show of presence was conducted to reassure friendly forces air power was overhead.
Airlift Action
Helmand Province, RC-S
A U.S. Air Force C-17 Globemaster III aircrew flew combat-resupply missions in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, airdropping 60,000 pounds of combat-sustainment supplies to friendly forces.
Oruzgan Province, RC-S
A U.S. Air Force C-130 Hercules aircrew flew a low-cost low-altitude combat-airdrop mission in Oruzgan Province, Afghanistan, delivering approximately 1,200 pounds of combat-sustainment supplies to friendly forces.
