
Brown Relieves Radice During Beachmaster Unit Two Change of Command

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (NNS) -- Cmdr. Robert M. Brown relieved Cmdr. Richard A. Radice as Commanding Officer of Beachmaster Unit (BMU) Two during a change of command ceremony at the unit May 6.
The ceremony was presided over by Capt. Clayton Saunders, Commander, Naval Beach Group (COMNAVBEACHGRU) Two.
Radice had served as BMU Two commanding officer since September 2008 and had recently led the Beach Party Group for the Amphibious Relief Mission in Haiti. He is scheduled to next serve as Operations Officer for Expeditionary Strike Group (ESG) Two.
Brown, a native of St. Louis, Mo., most recently served as Executive Officer of BMU Two. Enlisting in the Navy in March 1985, Brown completed both Recruit Training and Sonar Technician "A" school, bfore reporting to Shore Intermediate Maintenance Activity (SIMA) in Long Beach, Calif.
Brown was selected for participation in the Broadened Opportunity for Officer Selection and Training (BOOST) program in 1987, after which he attended and graduated from California State University at Long Beach. He subsequently completed Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) requirements at the University of California Los Angeles in 1992.
Brown's first ship assignment was aboard USS Vincennes (CG 49) from January 1993 to February 1996.
Brown next reported to the Atlanta Region NROTC Unit as Freshman Advisor at Morehouse College from April 1996 to February 1998. He subsequently completed the Surface Warfare Officer (SWO) Department Head course in August 1998 and was assigned as Operations Officer aboard USS Stark (FFG 31) in August 1998.
After Stark was decommissioned, Brown reported aboard USS John Hancock (DD 981) in March 1999, deploying to the Mediterranean and Arabian Gulf.
Brown next served as Executive Officer aboard USS Falcon (MHC 59) in June 2000, and upon completion of this tour, he reported for duty as Assistant Maritime Operations Officer on the Carrier Group Eight Staff, Carrier Group Eight, later renamed Carrier Strike Group (CSG) Eight, in March 2002.
Brown next attended the Naval War College in Newport, R.I., in September 2004, and next reported to Pre-Commissioning Unit (PCU) Forrest Sherman in March 2005 as Executive Officer.
Brown next served as Chief Staff Officer aboard Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 22 in June 2007, before reporting to BMU Two as Executive Officer in September 2008.
Brown's awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy Commendation Medal with four gold stars, the Navy Achievement Medal with gold star, and various unit and service awards.
