British soldier killed by Afghan insurgents

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

London, April 8, IRNA -- A British soldier has died after coming under attack by insurgents in Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence in London has announced.

The soldier was killed by a gunshot wound in an exchange of fire while on foot patrol near Showal, in the Nad-e-Ali District of Helmand Province on Wednesday.

The town of Showal was taken during Operation Moshtarak, which was launched with US forces earlier this year to target Taliban strongholds in central Helmand.

The latest death brings the total number of British troops killed in Afghanistan since the overthrow of the Taliban regime in 2001 to 281, 102 more than were killed in Iraq.

So far this year, 36 British soldiers have lost their lives in Afghanistan at a proportionately higher rate than the 108 who were killed in 2008.
