EVERETT, Wash. (NNS) -- Naval Station Everett hosted the groundbreaking for the Advanced Metering Infrastructure Initiative (AMI), the largest American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) project in the Northwest March 29.

The ARRA supports project funding for Department of Defense programs such as Military Construction and Energy Conservation Investment while creating jobs and contributing to America's economic recovery. The $31 million AMI will include the installation of automated monitoring systems including electrical, gas, water and steam and the replacement of aging transformers at Naval Station Everett, Naval Air Station Whidbey Island and Naval Base Kitsap (NBK).

According to Capt. Thomas Mascolo, commanding officer Naval Station Everett, it is imperative for everyone to reduce energy consumption.

"This initiative is to make us more aware of what we're using in the way of utility consumption and getting that information into the hands of the users who monitor and ultimately conserve that power," said Mascolo.

The AMI is scheduled to begin at Naval Station Everett in August 2010 and should be completed at NBK in August 2011.

Rear Adm. James A. Symonds, commander, Navy Region Northwest, said the monitoring system has the potential to be the critical piece in energy consumption.

"We will finally know, down to the individual building, how our utilities bill is being spent, and we'll understand better how to minimize our energy use," said Symonds.

To close out the event, Symonds and Mascolo ceremoniously pried off an old meter and started one of the new meters while the crowd observed.
