TASHKENT, April 6 (RIA Novosti) - The general in charge of U.S. operations in Iraq and Afghanistan will discuss the situation in Afghanistan with Uzbek President Islam Karimov, a U.S. embassy officer said on Tuesday.
U.S. Embassy Public Affairs Officer Molly Stephenson told RIA Novosti that U.S. Central Command General David Petraeus, who is currently on a visit to Uzbekistan, will discuss, among other things, non-military cargo transits via Uzbekistan.
She added that cargoes would include building materials, pharmaceuticals, and foodstuffs.
She said Petraeus would not discuss the issue of a U.S. military base on Uzbek soil with Karimov.
Petraeus is also due to meet with a number of high-ranking Uzbek state and government officials, including the foreign minister, the defense minister, and the foreign trade minister.
Stephenson said the U.S. general had arrived in Uzbekistan on a one-day visit from Kazakhstan and would not be visiting other Central Asian states.
Neighboring Russia has allowed land transits of non-lethal NATO supplies to Afghanistan and promised more assistance in the bloc's operations in the war-torn country by expanding transits, supplying helicopters and training Afghan security forces.
