FORD ISLAND, Hawaii (NNS) -- "Strengthening the Tribe" was a theme for the second annual Knowledge Management (KM) Conference hosted by Commander, U.S. Pacific Fleet (PACFLT) March 31 to April 2, 2010.
"The purpose of the PACFLT Knowledge Management Conference (PACFLT KMC10) is to give KM, Information Management (IM) practitioners the opportunity to exchange real methods and solutions that they could walk away with and apply," said Jamie Hatch, PACFLT Knowledge Management Officer.
The Navy defines KM as "the integration of people and processes, enabled by technology, to facilitate the exchange of operationally relevant information and expertise to increase organizational performance".
"Our most valuable assets in the Pacific Fleet are our people and their expertise," said Hatch. "Managing and improving the processes that allow people to share information and learn from one another is critical to day to day fleet and military management."
The more than 70 attendees of this year's conference included KM Officers and IM Officers from all branches of the military service within the PACFLT area of responsibility and 26 were also students in the Afloat Knowledge Manager Course offered by Tactical Training Group Pacific.
This year's conference featured a unique workshop program, based of the reality TV show "Survivor," designed to exercise teamwork and decision making skills.
Topics discussed during the conference included afloat information management tools, multinational collaboration, integration with Microsoft SharePoint and "tribal challenge."
"Its great to have the opportunity to attend this conference to learn new tools and techniques that I can take back and apply to my job," said Information Systems Technician 1st Class Patrick Miller, PACFLT N4 Deployment Management Team. "Most importantly though, I'm walking away with a better network of support."
