Jacksonville, Fla. (NNS) -- A Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Southeast military construction project for new dormitories on board Shaw Air Force Base (AFB), S.C., was awarded the U.S. Green Building Council's (USGBC) Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver Certification at a March 15 ceremony that took place at the installation.
"Green buildings save a lot of money for the Air Force," said Col. Dean Anderson, 20th Fighter Wing vice commander.
By using less energy and water, LEED certified buildings save money for families, businesses and taxpayers. It also reduces greenhouse gas emissions and contributes to a healthier environment for residents, workers and the larger community.
The new dormitory earned its LEED Silver Certification in part for the use of recycled materials and materials obtained from regional sources for construction. Additionally, geothermal wells are used to support room and water heating for the facility.
LEED requirements are not only a NAVFAC goal, but are Congressionally mandated. NAVFAC set a goal back in 2009 of having all military construction projects meet LEED requirements.
The scope of this project included the construction of a dormitory totaling approximately 54,302 square feet. The building features two wings of four-person living modules, housing a total of 72 airmen each, connected by a covered walkway at each floor. A one-story commons building is located between the two dorm wings. The commons includes the central mechanical, electrical, communications and fire protection rooms plus two multipurpose rooms, vending area office, storage and two toilets.
The dormatory project cost $16 million and was completed in March 2009.
This is the second LEED Silver facility at Shaw AFB. The first building was the library, and both buildings were NAVFAC projects.
