SAN DIEGO, (NNS) -- Fleet and Industrial Supply Center (FISC) San Diego celebrated the relocation of its headquarters operation to building 116 at Naval Base San Diego with a ribbon-cutting ceremony April 2.
Hosted by FISC San Diego's commanding officer, Capt. Glenn Robillard, this historically significant event officially kicked off the first move for the command since it was established at the downtown Navy Broadway Complex in 1922.
"For many years our organization has remained a fixture on Broadway," said Robillard. "But our history and legacy there is much more than buildings and material. It includes the generations of families and friends who worked there every day through the years. For nearly a century it was a part of the lives of thousands of San Diegans and we look forward to continuing that legacy in our new location."
Known originally as Naval Supply Depot San Diego, FISC San Diego has grown exponentially in size and scope through its 88-year history. It began with 49 employees and one building at the downtown waterfront, where the command remained until April 2.
The decision to move the headquarters and business department of the organization was based on several converging factors, each closely examined by leaders.
Specifically, it was growth, development and customer service and that changed the need to be downtown, said Mike Stames, FISC San Diego executive director.
"We used to supply the ships directly off Broadway Pier," said Stames. "Now they no longer stop there but go to the naval base instead. It makes sense for us to consolidate the various elements of our operation and go where the customers are."
The move also allows the command a chance to improve quality-of-life initiatives for its employees.
"If we were to stay downtown, we expect that only one in four employees would have nearby parking available in a few years," said Robillard. "An opportunity like this helps us ensure we stay ahead of those kinds of issues impacting our workforce."
The new location on Naval Station San Diego was built as a general warehouse and bulk administrative work area in 1943. It provides more than 132,000 square-feet of remodeled work space, increased parking ability and will bring together personnel currently scattered between seven locations in the metro San Diego area.
"It's just the right move for us at the right time," said Robillard. "We owe it to both our workers and our customers."
FISC San Diego, one of seven supply centers under Commander, Fleet and Industrial Supply Centers (COMFISCS), provides global logistics, business and support services to fleet, shore and industrial commands of the Navy, Coast Guard, Military Sealift Command, and other joint and allied forces.
