Eight Afghan people die in terrorist attack on farmers
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Kabul, March 31, IRNA -- Eight Afghan people were killed when a remote control bomb placed on a motorcyle exploded near a queue of farmers to get anti-opium aid Wednesday in southern Afghanistan, police said.
IRNA reporter in Kabul said that an additional 38 people were injured in the blast in the district of Nahr-e-Sarraj, just north of Lashkar Gah in Helmand province.
Most of the victims were farmers and other Afghans lined up to receive fertilizer and seeds from the government program designed to persuade farmers to switch from poppy cultivation, the most profitable crop in Helmand, to wheat and other crops.
Kamaluddin, the deputy provincial police chief who uses only one name, said a higher original figure of 17 dead was incorrect and had resulted from a miscommunication.
