NORFOLK (NNS) -- The Joint inspector general, French Air Force visited commander, U.S. 2nd Fleet March 16 to foster ongoing relationships with the U.S. Military and to assist in training and certification of forces before operational deployments.

As inspector general, Gen. Jean-Pierre Martin focuses on warfighting and readiness. He is responsible for several duties ranging from inspections and investigations to training and intelligence oversight.

Martin also visited commander, Strike Force Training Atlantic (CSFTL), as part of his trip to U.S. 2nd Fleet. CSFTL is responsible for enabling, mentoring and assessing integrated tactical training in order to ensure warfighting primacy across the entire range of naval operations.

Rear Adm. Garry R. White, CSFTL, and his staff, gave Martin an overview of the Fleet Readiness Training Plan. The overview included the resources needed to complete realistic training, the training environment that CSFTL provides and the process by which CSFTL assesses the participants.

"In today's maritime environment we will not operate alone, and the ability to integrate our operations with our allies and partners is a key part of our training syllabus," said Mort White, Plans and Policy department head at CSFTL. "It benefits that effort to share our processes with the French and it is especially encouraging that such a high level leader takes a personal role in this sharing of information. We have always maintained a professional and mutually beneficial relationship with the French military and look forward to greater integration in the future."

Martin's visit to Norfolk was part of a larger agenda. It included a trip to the Pentagon to meet with Air Force leadership about their training initiatives. He also visited U.S. Marine Corps leadership at Quantico, Va., as well as the Army leadership at the National Training Center at Ft. Irwin, Calif.
