MILLINGTON, Tenn. (NNS) -- New reporting guidelines for Individual Personnel Tempo (ITEMPO) affects Sailors deployed in support of Operation Unified Response (OUR) Haiti.
ITEMPO tracks and reports deployment days of Sailors away from their homeport or assigned unit.
With the increased deployment demands on the Navy, it is important that Sailors are aware of ITEMPO requirements. The Department of Defense policy states that deployment of all service members active or Reserve is required to be tracked on an individual basis. ITEMPO was developed for that purpose.
"What the Sailor and his or her command need to know is how to categorize a Haiti deployment," said Doug DeGraw, ITEMPO customer service lead. "The submission code for the OUR event should be identified by Category Code A, 'operations,' and Purpose Code G, 'humanitarian operations.'"
"The ITEMPO program is not only a legislative requirement, but it's the right thing to do for our Sailors," said Yeoman 1st Class (SW) Sherry Jones, ITEMPO program manager.
ITEMPO data may be used when a Sailor is being considered for permanent-change-of-station orders or an individual augmentee (IA) assignment. Documenting deployments ensures that Sailors receive proper credit for their service time.
For the Sailor transitioning to the Navy Reserve, a documented deployment history supports the Navy's initiative to defer involuntary mobilization.
"It is impossible for our office to know the deployment schedule for every unit or individual in the Navy," said Jones. "The responsibility and requirement to report ITEMPO for Sailors must appropriately rest with the commanding officer (CO). It is vital that every CO be personally involved to ensure that ITEMPO information is submitted in an accurate and timely manner."
Sailors can log on to Bupers Online (BOL) to verify their ITEMPO report. The report can be found under the applications list, NavPers Legacy and ITEMPO. Commanding officers or the command ITEMPO representatives can also log on to BOL, under the NavPers Legacy and ITEMPO page and review the user guide for instructions on how to document ITEMPO.
"The ideal solution for ITEMPO would be for commands to modify the check-in/check-out process to include the ITEMPO coordinator to ensure the information is updated in the ITEMPO system," said Jones.
