NATO Commander meets Pakistan's army chief

Islamabad, March 19, IRNA -- Gen. Stanley McChrystal, NATO’s International Security Assistance Force commander, traveled to Pakistan Thursday to update Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani on ISAF’s operations in Afghanistan, the US embassy and the army said.

Gen. McChrystal, who visits Pakistan regularly to consult with Gen. Kayani on ISAF activities in Afghanistan, praised Pakistan’s efforts to confront violent extremists and honored the sacrifices the country is making, a US embassy statement said.

He also highlighted the successes being achieved through increased coordination between ISAF and Pakistan in strengthening border security and countering violent extremists, it said.

Amb. Mark Sedwell, NATO’s senior civilian representative to Afghanistan, also visited to conduct meetings with NATO and Coalition diplomatic officials here, the statement said.

Gen. McChrystal and Amb. Sedwell briefed NATO and Coalition ambassadors to Pakistan on ISAF’s current operations in Afghanistan, it added.

A Pakistan’s army statement said General McChrystal, remained with the army chief for some time and discussed matters of professional interest.
