Belgium extends Afghan military mission
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Berlin, March 19, IRNA -- Belgium has extended its NATO-led military operation in Afghanistan for another year, the Belgian news agency Belga reported Friday.
The new mandate which is set to expire at the end of 2011, is to include an upper limit of 625 Belgian troops.
The decision of the Belgian government comes in the wake of a request by NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen and the US.
The western military operation in Afghanistan remains highly controversial in many European countries, especially after the Dutch government decided to pull out its forces from the war-stricken country.
