Soldier dies in UK from Afghan wounds

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

London, March 16, IRNA -- Britain’s Ministry of Defence (MoD) announced Tuesday the death of a UK soldier, who was wounded in Afghanistan last month.

The soldier was said to have died in hospital in Birmingham, central England, after being injured in an explosion while on a patrol to the north of Musa Qalah district centre in Helmand province on February 21.

Defence Secretary Bob Ainsworth announced last week that British troops are due to hand over responsibility for the security of Musa Qaleh district to US forces as part of a major "rebalancing" of UK forces in Helmand.

The latest British death is the seventh so far this month and brings the total to 273 since the overthrow of the Taliban regime in 2001.

Official figures show that 1,126 UK military and civilian personnel were admitted to UK Field Hospitals and categorised as Wounded in Action in the period 1 January 2006 to 15 February 2010 and during the period, 3,115 aeromedical evacuations have taken place.

Out of the numbers, a total of 333 were categorised as Seriously or Very Seriously Injured from all causes excluding disease.
