CHITTAGONG, Bangladesh (NNS) -- The mine countermeasures ship USS Patriot (MCM 7) arrived in Chittagong, Bangladesh, for a port visit March 13.
During the visit, Sailors from the U.S. and Bangladesh Navy will train together.
"We will be doing damage control training; we will be doing static displays concerning damage control. We have a community service project set up. We have a cultural day, and we have a sports day," said Lt. Cmdr. Patrick German, Patriot's executive officer.
Patriot will get underway with five officers and 10 sailors from the Bangladesh Navy, who will see how a U.S. Navy warship operates at sea, said German.
Basketball and volleyball games are also planned between Sailors from the Patriot and Bangladesh Navy, said Lt. j.g. Albert Sharlow, Patriot's operations officer.
For many Sailors the highlight of the visit will be a community service project.
"We're going to be going to an elementary school. We're going to help them paint a little bit, hand out some candy to all the school children and socialize with them," said Mineman 2nd Class Tyler King, Patriot's assistant community service project coordinator.
More Sailors signed up for the community service project than will be able to go.
"We have spaces for 25 Sailors, and we have about 35 signed up, so some can't go that want to," said King.
Patriot is one of four mine countermeasures ships permanently forward deployed to Sasebo, Japan. Patriot reports to Rear Adm. Richard Landolt, commander, Amphibious Force 7th Fleet, based in Okinawa, Japan.
